Medical Engineering

Medical engineering is a discipline that integrates engineering technology, fundamental science and medical science for application in clinical studies, injury prevention/control and ergonomics. It can be categorized into three sub-fields: medical electronics, biomechanics and biomedical materials. Established in May 1984, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering was the first institute offering a graduate program in biomedical engineering in Taiwan, admitting students from the disciplines of science, engineering and agriculture in order to cultivate research on and development of technology. Considering the importance of biomedical engineering in clinical medicine and the urgent need for related experts, we established the first Ph.D. program in this field in Taiwan in June 1991. The Institute has built up cooperative education programs with Veterans General Hospital, Cheng Hsing Hospital, Mackay Memorial Hospital, and Shin Kong Hospital and became one of the top institutes in biomedical engineering.

In order to expand mid-term and long-term development, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering continues to increase the quality and quantity of the faculty's research projects. To this end, we have established the Institute of Rehabilitation Science and Technology and the Institute of Biophotonics Engineering together with the Institute of Medical Informatics, which will go into operation soon. The establishment of these institutes not only demonstrates the expansion and growth in research capability of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering but also the assurance and support from different fields that has been earned by our endeavors over the years. Moreover, our institute is planning to establish the Department of Biomedical Engineering, hoping to extend training to undergraduate level to provide more biomedical engineering personnel. After establishing the undergraduate program, we will integrate the Institute of Medical Engineering, Institute of Rehabilitation Science and Technology, the Institute of Biophotonics Engineering, the Institute of Medical Informatics, and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering into the first College of Biomedical Engineering that will be able to offer quality education and cultivate more R&D expertise in medical technology business in the future.

After years of efforts and devotion, our medical engineering program is becoming a potent R&D team with high competitiveness and research capability at the international level.
