Pharmaceutical Science

Facing new human disease patterns and the post-genome era of the 21st century, life science and the development of new drugs has entered a competitive and challenging era. In the future, the target for the development of new drugs will relate to the control of genes involved in major human diseases using functional genomics and bioinformatics. By chemical synthesis and modification and through the help of structural biology and molecule simulation as well as the introduction of combinational chemistry, we can create new lead compounds. With the help of transgenic animals, we are able to manifest the genes related to human diseases and the symptoms of the diseases and use the pathological patterns within these animals for the development of new drugs. The planning for the establishment of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science at Yang Ming is complete and approved by the Ministry of Education. Through the establishment of an intercollegiate research team and curriculum, we can integrate life science and clinical medicine, train professional personnel in innovative drug development and start a modern pharmaceutical science education and research system in response to the post-genome era.

At present, many of our faculty members in traditional pharmacy, biopharmaceutical science, pharmacology and biochemistry are engaging in research on Chinese herbal medicines and natural products. The pharmaceutical researchers at the National Research Institute of Chinese Medicine on our campus and many researchers from the Department of Medical Research and Education, Taipei Veterans General Hospital will form one of the leading research team studying Chinese herbal medicines and natural products in Taiwan and the world. Moreover, the research team is able to conduct interdisciplinary research in related areas such as pharmaceutical chemistry and biochemistry.

The College of Pharmaceutical Science and Biotechnology is aimed to include three research centers that bridge industry-academy cooperation. The three research centers are the New Drugs Development Center, the Chemical Analysis and Chemical Development Center, and the Chinese Herbal Medicine Research Center. The mission for the New Drug Development Center is to use gene technology, protein purification, research on the chemical ingredient separation and research on chemical ingredients and bioassays to develop anti-aging drugs, anti-cancer drugs and medication that improves immune function. This will involve various technical platforms and research experience including primary cell/tissue culture and animal testing. The Chemical Analysis and Chemical Development Center offers support to the research (RNS isolation/purification/structure identification) and is responsible for development/preservation/application of chemicals at the center. Meanwhile, the Chinese Herbal Medicine Research Center is disease-oriented (including hepatocirrhosis, liver rejuvenation, anti-viral drugs and blood cholesterol control together with areas such as atherosclerosis, aging, tumors and improving immune function). Integrated with this research is the development of stable forms of the drugs, correct dosage and overall standardization of Chinese herbal medicine and herbal pharmacology. We are thus engaged in the exploration of therapeutic effects and pathogenesis related to tradition Chinese medicine. In addition, we will study the genome regulation and molecular biological reaction mechanisms using genomics and proteomics.

Our pharmacology research aims to integrate the development of modern life science and clinical medicine with the development of new drugs. At the present, we have made numerous accomplishments in the R&D field of Chinese herbal medicine, and signed a range of important agreements with the industry to develop new drugs jointly. The potential for the future is unlimited.
