Prof. Chau-Hwang Lee, Institute of Biophotonics, National Yang-Ming University, won the 2012 Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research Investigators.
On June 5, 2012, Academia Sinica held an award ceremony for this year's winners of the Research Award for Junior Research Investigators. There were 75 applications in the Mathematics and Physical Sciences Division this year. After a stringent review procedure, five young scholars were selected. Prof. Chau-Hwang Lee, Institute of Biophotonics, National Yang-Ming University, was one of the winners in this Division.
The research group of Prof. Chau-Hwang Lee has been focused on the investigation of optical nano-profilometry and super-resolution optical imaging techniques. They are capable of performing super-resolution optical imaging of live cells without fluorescent labeling. Prof. Lee's group verified the physical model of the active membrane waves on live cells, and confirmed that these active membrane waves were driven by the interactions between myosin II and actin polymerization. Later, Prof. Lee's group published a series of works that combined optical imaging and microfluidic cell culture chips to study the interactions between cancer cells and the microenvironment or the stromal cells. They clarified one of the molecular transportations between cancer cells and fibroblasts. The optical imaging-microfluidic platform developed by Prof. Chau-Hwang Lee will be able to provide useful information in the investigations of cancer cells and stem cells. It is also feasible to apply this platform in drug screening.
